Mehrangarh Fort

Rajasthan

Mehrangarh towers over Jodhpur from a sheer rocky outcrop, its walls rising up to around 36 metres. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, it is still owned by the royal family of Marwar and run as one of the best museums in India.

From its ramparts you look down on the indigo painted houses of the Blue City. Jodhpur is usually reached on a longer Rajasthan tour, between Jaipur or Udaipur and the desert city of Jaisalmer.

What to see

  • The gates. Seven gates lead up to the fort. Look for the cannonball scars on the walls and the handprints of royal widows by the Loha Pol.
  • Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. Lavish palace rooms of gold, paint and mirrors, among the finest in Rajasthan.
  • The museum galleries. Royal palanquins, elephant howdahs, arms, textiles and miniature paintings.
  • The ramparts. Old cannons line the walls, with sweeping views over the Blue City.

Tips for your visit

  • A lift runs from the lower gates to the palace for a small fee if you prefer not to climb.
  • The included audio guide is excellent and well worth using.
  • Adventure fans can ride the zip lines around the fort walls.
