Munnar Tea Hills

Kerala

Munnar sits at about 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats, surrounded by hills carpeted in tea bushes. It was a summer retreat in British times, and its cool air and walking trails make a welcome change from the heat of the coast.

Most Kerala tours spend two nights in Munnar, about four hours by road from Kochi, before heading down to the backwaters.

What to see and do

  • Tea estates. Walk among the bushes and visit a working factory to see how leaves become tea.
  • Tata Tea Museum. The history of tea in the region, with a tasting at the end.
  • Eravikulam National Park. Rolling grasslands and the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat. Usually closed for a few weeks in February and March for the calving season.
  • Viewpoints and waterfalls. Top Station, Mattupetty dam and several waterfalls are within a short drive.
