Changu Narayan

Kathmandu Valley · UNESCO World Heritage

Changu Narayan stands on a ridge above the valley, a few kilometres north of Bhaktapur. Dedicated to Vishnu, it is thought to be the oldest temple site in the Kathmandu Valley, and its courtyard holds some of the finest stone and wood carving in Nepal.

Far fewer people visit than the city sights, which makes it a peaceful stop. It pairs naturally with Bhaktapur, and many travellers walk between the two or continue on foot to Nagarkot.

What to see

  • The temple. A two tiered pagoda, rebuilt in the early 18th century after a fire, with richly carved roof struts showing the many forms of Vishnu.
  • The inscription pillar. A stone pillar near the west door carries an inscription from 464 CE, the oldest dated inscription found in Nepal.
  • The courtyard sculptures. Look for the kneeling Garuda facing the temple and the stone images of Vishnu, some of the finest early sculpture in the valley.
  • The village. The old Newar settlement around the temple has a small museum and quiet lanes with views over the valley.

Combining Changu Narayan with other sights

The most popular plan is to visit Changu Narayan in the morning and spend the afternoon in Bhaktapur, either by road or on a downhill walk of around an hour and a half.

Hikers often walk the ridge between Nagarkot and Changu Narayan, a pleasant half day trail through villages and terraced fields with mountain views in clear weather.
