Aoraki/Mount Cook

Canterbury and Mount Cook · UNESCO World Heritage

At 3,724 metres, Aoraki/Mount Cook is the highest peak in New Zealand and sacred to Ngai Tahu, the South Island's main iwi. The national park around it holds glaciers, turquoise lakes and some of the country's best short walks, all reached by a dead end road along Lake Pukaki.

Things to do

  • Hooker Valley Track: About 3 hours return over three swing bridges to Hooker Lake, with icebergs and the mountain behind.
  • Tasman Glacier: A viewpoint walk, or a boat trip among icebergs on the terminal lake in summer.
  • Ski plane flight: Land on the snowfields high on the Tasman Glacier.
  • Stargazing: Part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
  • Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre: Mountaineering history at the Hermitage hotel.

Where to stayMount Cook Village, or Twizel and Tekapo nearby
Best monthsNovember to April; clear winter days are stunning but cold
WeatherCloud can hide the peak for days: allow flexibility

Tip: Walk the Hooker Valley Track at sunrise for calm air, pink light on the mountain and far fewer people.

Who it suits

Anyone who can walk a few hours on a flat track. Climbing the mountain itself is a serious mountaineering expedition. Read more in our Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo guide.

When to go

November to April has the most settled weather for walking and flights, with long daylight hours. Winter brings snow down to the valley floor and crystal clear days, but the Hooker Valley Track can be icy and cold. Cloud can cover the summit at any time of year, so a two night stay doubles your chance of a clear view.

How it fits a trip

Mount Cook Village is a dead end, about 50 km off the main road between Christchurch and Queenstown, so most visitors stay one night between Lake Tekapo and Wanaka or Queenstown. See our South Island itinerary.
