Hobbiton Movie Set

The North Island

On a sheep farm near Matamata, the Hobbiton Movie Set recreates the Shire with 44 hobbit holes, gardens, the mill and the Green Dragon Inn. Built permanently for The Hobbit films, it's the only Middle earth set left standing, and one of New Zealand's most popular attractions.

What to expect

  • Guided walk: Through the Shire with stories about filming and the set.
  • Hobbit holes: Colourful doors and gardens, with a few you can step inside.
  • The Green Dragon Inn: A drink at the end of the tour.
  • Evening banquet tours: A feast and lantern lit walk on selected nights.

Practical information

Getting thereDrive or join a day tour from Auckland or Rotorua
Best timeAll year; the gardens are at their best in spring and summer
Combine withWaitomo glowworm caves and Rotorua on the same route

Tip: Book the first or last tour of the day for softer light and smaller crowds. See Rotorua and Hobbiton.

A bit of history

Peter Jackson's location scouts spotted the Alexander family farm from the air in 1998. The original Lord of the Rings set was made of temporary materials; when the crew returned for The Hobbit films, the Shire was rebuilt in permanent materials so it could stay open to visitors.

Who it suits

Fans of the films, families and garden lovers. It's a guided visit on gentle paths, so it suits most ages. If you're not a fan, it's still a well crafted, very photogenic stop on the way to Rotorua; if you're short of time, Rotorua and Waitomo may matter more.
