Sacsayhuaman

Cusco and the Sacred Valley

Sacsayhuaman's three tiers of zigzag walls are some of the most astonishing Inca stonework anywhere. Huge limestone blocks are cut to fit together so tightly that a knife blade will not slide between them.

It is a 20 to 30 minute uphill walk from the Plaza de Armas, or a short taxi ride, and is the stage for the Inti Raymi festival every 24 June.

Visiting

  • Go late afternoon. The light on the walls is warm and you can walk down into Cusco at sunset.
  • Combine the ruins. Take a taxi up to Tambomachay and walk back down past Puka Pukara, Q'enqo and Sacsayhuaman.
  • Inti Raymi. On 24 June a re-enactment of the Inca festival of the sun is staged here; seats sell out.
