Anuradhapura sacred city

The Cultural Triangle · UNESCO World Heritage

For more than a thousand years Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka. Its dagobas, among the largest brick structures of the ancient world, and the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha was enlightened, still draw pilgrims dressed in white.

Fewer tours come this far north, so it feels less busy than Sigiriya. It is also on the way to Jaffna.

Planning your visit

  • Early and late. The stone paths get hot underfoot by midday. Visit the stupas in the morning and late afternoon.
  • Don't miss. Ruwanwelisaya, the Sri Maha Bodhi, Jetavanaramaya and the Twin Ponds.
  • Add Mihintale. A hilltop monastery 20 minutes away, best at sunset. Busy on the June full moon (Poson).
