Zanzibar
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park protects Zanzibar's last large area of natural forest. It's the best place to see the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on Earth, which feeds close to the paths with little fear of people.
What to see
- Zanzibar red colobus: Endangered and endemic, seen on almost every visit near the forest edge.
- Forest walk: Tall trees, Sykes' monkeys and birds.
- Mangrove boardwalk: A raised walk through the mangroves of Chwaka Bay.
Tip: Keep a few metres from the monkeys and don't feed them: it harms their health.
Getting there and practical tips
- From Stone Town: About an hour by road; many tours combine Jozani with a spice farm or the south coast.
- Guides: Entry includes a park guide, who will find the monkeys and explain the forest.
- Time: Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours, including the mangrove boardwalk.
About the red colobus
The Zanzibar red colobus is found only on Zanzibar, and a large share of the population lives in and around Jozani. Conservation and community projects have helped numbers recover, and families of monkeys now feed in the trees beside the paths, which makes them easy to watch.
When to go
All year. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler and the monkeys are active. Paths can be muddy in April and May.
