Materuni waterfalls and coffee

Kilimanjaro and Arusha

Materuni is a Chagga village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, about 30 to 45 minutes above Moshi. A walk through banana and coffee gardens leads to a tall waterfall in a forested gorge, and most visits end with a hands on coffee tour.

What to expect

  • The hike: Through farms and forest to the waterfall, with views of the mountain on clear days.
  • The falls: A tall, narrow waterfall in a green gorge; the pool is cold but swimmable.
  • Coffee tour: Pick, roast and grind beans with a local family, then drink the coffee you made.

Tip: Wear shoes with grip: the path is slippery after rain.

Getting there

  • From Moshi: About 30 to 45 minutes by car on a winding road up the mountain.
  • Tours: Half day tours from Moshi include transport, a local guide, the village fee and the coffee tour.
  • Combine with: The Kikuletwa hot springs on the same day, or a rest day before your climb.

When to go

All year. The waterfall is fullest in and after the rainy seasons, from about April to June and in November and December, when the path is also at its muddiest. The dry months give easier walking and clearer views of Kilimanjaro.

Who it suits

Climbers with a spare day in Moshi, families and anyone who wants to see village life on the mountain's slopes. The walk is steep in places but suits most people of reasonable fitness. See Arusha and Moshi for other day trips.
