Nungwi and Kendwa beaches
Zanzibar
Nungwi and Kendwa, on Zanzibar's northern tip, are the island's most popular beaches. Unlike the east coast, the sea here stays deep at low tide, so you can swim whenever you like, and the beaches face west for sunsets.
Things to do
- Sunset dhow cruise: On a traditional sailing boat.
- Mnemba Atoll: Snorkelling and diving on a protected reef, often with dolphins on the way.
- Dhow builders: Watch boats being built by hand on Nungwi beach.
- Turtle sanctuary: A community run lagoon pool in Nungwi.
Nungwi or Kendwa?
| Nungwi | Kendwa | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Busy village, bars and restaurants | Quieter, with a long wide beach |
| Beach | Narrower, rocky in places | Broad, soft sand |
| Good for | Nightlife and activities | Relaxing and swimming |
Tip: Book a beachfront room facing west for sunsets, and check for seaweed seasons, which vary through the year.
When to go
June to October brings dry, breezy weather, and December to February is hot and calm with the clearest water for snorkelling. April and May are the wettest months, and some hotels close. Seaweed can wash up at certain times; ask your hotel about recent conditions.
Getting there
- From the airport: About 1 to 1.5 hours by road.
- From Stone Town: The same, or as part of a spice farm tour on the way.
- From the safari: Fly into Zanzibar's airport from Arusha or the Serengeti, then drive north.
Honest downsides
Nungwi in particular is busy, with beach sellers and big resorts, and building has spread along the coast. For quiet, look at Kendwa's southern end or the north east coast, accepting the tides there.
