Tarangire National Park

The northern safari circuit

Tarangire is about 2.5 hours from Arusha and covers some 2,850 square kilometres of baobab studded savannah, swamps and the Tarangire River. From June to October, when the surrounding land dries out, the river draws some of the largest elephant gatherings in Africa.

What to see

  • Elephants: Herds of dozens or even hundreds along the river in the dry season.
  • Baobabs: Ancient trees, some hollowed by elephants, that give the park its look.
  • Predators: Lions, leopards and cheetahs, and pythons sometimes resting in trees.
  • Birds: More than 500 species, especially in the wet season.

Who it suits

Tarangire is a great first stop on a northern safari and a highlight in the dry season. In the wet season, from November to May, the elephants disperse and the park is quieter. See our Tarangire and Lake Manyara guide.

When to go

Tarangire's season is the opposite of its neighbours'. From June to October, when the rest of the region dries out, elephants, zebras, wildebeest and buffaloes move in to drink from the Tarangire River and the park can feel as full as the Serengeti. From November to May many animals disperse into the wider landscape, the grass grows tall and the park becomes a birdwatcher's park, green and very quiet.

How long to stay

  • A full day: Enough for the northern river loops and a picnic lunch under a baobab.
  • One night inside: Lets you explore the quieter south and the Silale swamp, with sunset and sunrise drives.
  • Half a day: Possible on the way from Arusha, but you'll only see the area near the gate.

Honest downsides

Tsetse flies can be a nuisance in wooded areas, and the northern loops near the main gate get busy in peak season. In the wet season wildlife is much more scattered. Plan your visit for the dry months if elephants are the reason you're going.
