Mekong Delta and Cai Rang floating market

The south

South of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong River splits into channels that spread across a vast, fertile delta. Life here moves by boat, past orchards, rice fields, villages and markets.

The best known sight is the Cai Rang floating market near Can Tho, where traders sell fruit and vegetables from boats at sunrise. It needs an overnight stay to see properly.

What to see and do

  • Cai Rang floating market. Boats piled with produce, with traders hanging samples from tall poles.
  • Canals by sampan. Narrow waterways shaded by coconut palms.
  • Orchards and workshops. Tropical fruit, coconut candy and rice paper making.
  • Homestays. A night with a local family in the countryside.
