The short answer

In the Masai Mara
Usually July to October
River crossings
Most likely August and September
Rest of the year
Tanzania's Serengeti
Nights to allow
At least 3 in the Mara

The Great Migration is a never ending loop. The herds calve on the southern Serengeti plains early in the year, move north through the Serengeti as the grass runs out, and cross the Mara River into Kenya in the dry season, before heading south again with the short rains.

For most of the year the migration is in Tanzania. Kenya gets the most dramatic chapter: the river crossings, when thousands of wildebeest plunge into the crocodile filled Mara River.

River crossings: what to expect

  • They can't be predicted: Herds may gather on a bank for hours or days, then cross in minutes, or turn back. Guides share news by radio, but patience is part of it.
  • Allow time: Three or four nights in the Mara, with full day game drives, gives you a good chance of seeing a crossing in August or September.
  • Crowds: Crossing points in the main reserve can draw many vehicles. Rangers keep vehicles back from the river so the animals can cross.
  • Not just wildebeest: The herds draw lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas, so big cat sightings are excellent in migration season.

Seeing the migration outside July to October

From December to March the herds are on the southern Serengeti plains in Tanzania, where calving in February draws big predator action. Many tours combine Kenya and Tanzania; see Kenya or Tanzania for a safari.

Frequently asked questions

What month is best to see the Great Migration in Kenya?

August and September are usually best, with the herds in the Masai Mara and river crossings most likely. July and October can also be very good.

Is the migration in Kenya or Tanzania?

Both. The herds spend most of the year in Tanzania's Serengeti and usually spend July to October in Kenya's Masai Mara.

How many days do I need to see a river crossing?

Allow at least three nights in the Masai Mara in August or September. Crossings happen on their own schedule, so more time means better odds.
