At the top of the South Island, near Nelson, Abel Tasman's coast is lined with sheltered bays reached only by boat or on foot. It's the easiest Great Walk and a perfect break from long drives.

Ways to explore

  • Water taxi and walk: Get dropped off up the coast and walk back to Marahau, about 3 to 5 hours.
  • Sea kayaking: Guided half or full day trips, with seals at Tonga Island.
  • The Coast Track: A 60 km Great Walk over 3 to 5 days, with huts and campsites to book.
  • Cruise: A scenic boat trip along the whole coast.

Tip: Check the tide tables: some estuary crossings on the Coast Track can only be walked around low tide.

Getting there

Marahau, the main gateway, is about an hour from Nelson, which has flights from Auckland and Wellington. From the Picton ferry, allow about 2.5 hours by road.
