Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi, is a fiord in Fiordland National Park where cliffs rise straight out of the sea to Mitre Peak, nearly 1,700 metres high. It's one of the wettest places on Earth, and after rain hundreds of waterfalls pour down the walls.

Getting there is half the experience: the Milford Road from Te Anau is one of the world's great drives, but it's long, and the weather can close it.

Getting there

  • Day trip from Queenstown: Coach tours leave around 7am and return about 12 hours later. Comfortable, but a very long day.
  • Stay in Te Anau: It halves the drive and lets you reach Milford Sound early, before the coaches.
  • Fly: Scenic flights from Queenstown take about 40 minutes each way; bad weather can cancel them.
  • Winter: The road can close for avalanche risk, and drivers must carry snow chains in the colder months.

Tip: Don't cancel for rain: Milford Sound is at its most dramatic in a downpour, when temporary waterfalls appear everywhere.

Milford or Doubtful Sound?

Doubtful Sound is larger, wilder and much quieter, reached by a boat across Lake Manapouri and a bus over the Wilmot Pass. It takes a full day from Te Anau and costs more, but you'll share it with far fewer boats.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milford Sound worth the long drive?

Yes, for most people, especially if you stay in Te Anau. The drive itself is one of the highlights.

Can you do Milford Sound as a day trip from Queenstown?

Yes, by coach (about 12 hours return) or by scenic flight. Staying in Te Anau makes it far easier.

What is the best month to visit Milford Sound?

November to April has the longest days and the road is reliably open. It rains in every month.

Will there be a fee to visit Milford Sound?

Possibly. A bill to charge international visitors at Milford Sound and three other sites was introduced in May 2026, but no amount or date has been set.
