| Details | |
|---|---|
| Who needs it | Visitors from visa waiver countries, including the UK, USA, Canada and most of Europe; also most transit passengers |
| Cost | NZ$17 in the official app or NZ$23 on the website |
| Visitor levy | NZ$100, paid at the same time |
| Valid for | Up to 2 years, for multiple visits |

| Others | Visitors who need a visa pay the levy with their visa application |
Most visitors need an NZeTA (NZ$17 in the app, NZ$23 online) plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, paid together. Australian passport holders pay neither. Checked October 2026.
Tip: Use only the official Immigration New Zealand app or website. Look alike sites charge large extra fees.
Biosecurity
- Declare it: Food, plants, seeds, animal products and outdoor gear must be declared. Officers check bags and use detector dogs.
- Fines: Undeclared risk items can bring an instant NZ$400 fine.
- Clean gear: Hiking boots, tents and bikes should be clean of soil before you pack them.

Updated 17 October 2026New Zealand: guided tour or self drive? An honest comparison
Self drive is usually cheaper for two or more people and gives total freedom, but you plan everything and drive long, winding roads on the left. A tour costs more per person, but removes the driving, planning and booking, and suits solo travellers, first timers and anyone who'd rather look at the scenery.
Updated 17 October 2026How much does a New Zealand tour cost? Prices by tour type and a calculator
Expect about NZ$330 to 480 per person per day on a small group tour, NZ$380 to 560 on a classic coach tour and NZ$750 or more on a premium tour. Driving yourself costs about NZ$250 to 330 a day each for two sharing, including activities. Add NZ$117 for the NZeTA and visitor levy unless you're Australian.
