What's changed recentlyShow
- May 2026A bill was introduced to let the government charge international visitors for access to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and three other sites. No price or start date has been set.
Often called one of the world's best day hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing crosses the volcanic heart of the North Island, between Mount Ngauruhoe, Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films, and Mount Tongariro. The highlights are the steaming Red Crater and the bright Emerald Lakes.
The route
| Section | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Mangatepopo to Soda Springs | A gentle valley walk on boardwalks |
| The Devil's Staircase | A steep climb up to the South Crater |
| Red Crater (1,886 m) | The high point: loose scree, steam vents and wind |
| Emerald Lakes | A steep, slippery descent to the colourful lakes |
| Down to Ketetahi | A long descent through tussock and forest to the car park |
Getting there and parking
- Use a shuttle: In the peak season there's a 4 hour parking limit at the Mangatepopo start, too short for the hike. Park at the Ketetahi end and take a morning shuttle, or book a shuttle from Taupo or National Park Village.
- From Taupo: About an hour's drive to the trailhead.
- Start early: Most shuttles drop off between about 6 and 8am.
Safety and season
- Weather: Conditions change fast, and wind on the Red Crater can be dangerous. Check the mountain forecast and be ready to turn back.
- Gear: Hiking boots, warm and waterproof layers, hat and gloves, plenty of water and food.
- Winter: From about May to October, snow and ice make it an alpine climb. Only go with a guide and proper equipment.
- Sacred site: The peaks are sacred to Ngati Tuwharetoa. Please don't climb to the summits of Ngauruhoe or Tongariro.

Updated 17 October 2026New Zealand: guided tour or self drive? An honest comparison
Self drive is usually cheaper for two or more people and gives total freedom, but you plan everything and drive long, winding roads on the left. A tour costs more per person, but removes the driving, planning and booking, and suits solo travellers, first timers and anyone who'd rather look at the scenery.
Updated 17 October 2026How much does a New Zealand tour cost? Prices by tour type and a calculator
Expect about NZ$330 to 480 per person per day on a small group tour, NZ$380 to 560 on a classic coach tour and NZ$750 or more on a premium tour. Driving yourself costs about NZ$250 to 330 a day each for two sharing, including activities. Add NZ$117 for the NZeTA and visitor levy unless you're Australian.
