Peru's southern coast is desert, cut by the Pan American Highway. It makes an easy 2 or 3 day loop from Lima before you fly to Cusco or Arequipa, and because it is all close to sea level, it is a gentle start to a trip that will soon go much higher.
The route
| Stop | What to do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Paracas | Morning boat trip to the Ballestas Islands: sea lions, Humboldt penguins and huge seabird colonies, plus the Candelabra geoglyph. Then the desert and beaches of the Paracas reserve | 1 night |
| Huacachina | A small lagoon surrounded by giant dunes, near Ica. Sunset dune buggy rides and sandboarding; wineries and pisco tastings nearby | 1 night |
| Nazca | Flight over the Nazca Lines, or the roadside viewing tower; the Cantalloc aqueducts and Chauchilla cemetery | Half a day to 1 night |

Tip: The small planes bank steeply to show both sides. Fly early in the morning when the air is calmer, eat lightly beforehand, and only look out of your own side.
Tips
- Ballestas boats leave in the morning, when the sea is calmer. Afternoon trips are often cancelled for wind.
- Nazca flights can be delayed by wind and, near Pisco, by coastal fog from about June to September. Keep a spare morning.
- Hop on hop off buses and tours from Lima make this loop easy without driving.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Nazca Lines worth it?
For most visitors, yes: the figures are astonishing from the air. If you are short on time, a flight from Pisco saves the drive to Nazca but costs much more.
Can you see the Nazca Lines without flying?
Partly. A roadside tower shows two or three figures. You need a flight to see the famous ones.
How many days do you need for Paracas and Huacachina?
Two days covers both: Ballestas in the morning, Huacachina by afternoon. Add a day for Nazca.
