The short answer

About 2 hours

Trang An

Late May to early June

Ninh Binh is often called Ha Long Bay on land: steep karst peaks rise from flat rice paddies and rivers, with boats rowed through caves beneath the mountains. The Trang An Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is an easy day trip from Hanoi, but staying overnight lets you see the boats and viewpoints early, before the tour buses arrive.

Tip: Rowers often row with their feet. Bring a hat and sunscreen, as there is little shade on the boats.

Other things to do

  • Hang Mua: Around 500 steps to a dragon topped viewpoint over Tam Coc; best at sunrise or late afternoon.
  • Bai Dinh: A huge modern pagoda complex with long corridors of statues.
  • Hoa Lu: Temples of Vietnam's ancient capital from the 10th century.
  • Van Long: A quiet wetland reserve with boat trips and a chance to see rare langurs.
  • Cycling: Flat lanes between the peaks are perfect for a bike ride.

When to go

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. Late May to early June turns the rice in Tam Coc golden before the harvest; summer is hot and green. Winter is cool and often misty.
