Top choice desert in Uyuni & the Southwest Circuit.
The world's largest salt flat sits at a lofty 3653m (11,985ft) and blankets an amazing 12,000 sq km (4633 sq miles). It was part of a prehistoric salt lake, Lago Minchín, which once covered most of southwest Bolivia. When it dried up, it left a couple of seasonal puddles and several salt pans, including Salar de Uyuni. The savage beauty of this vast salt desert makes it one of South America's most awe-inspiring spectacles.
From strange islands in a sea of blindingly bright salt to delicately colored mineral lakes in the Andean mountains, this is an unforgettable Bolivian landscape.
La Paz also stands out for being an important cultural center at the Latin American level due to its cultural diversity; it houses monuments and important sites, such as the Basilica of San Francisco, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Plaza Murillo and Calle Jaén. The city is also known for its markets, particularly the Witches Market, and for its nightlife.
The area that this desert occupies today was covered 40,000 years ago by Lake Minchin and later, 11,000 years ago, by Lake Tauca. ... The first has been a predecessor of Lake Titicaca; the second covered from Uyuni to the north and Lake Tauca by evaporation gave rise to the Uyuni salt flats.
