Overview
The only way to get to the trail we use is to take a boat!
Whether you are well seasoned in the outdoors or never kayaked or stayed in a yurt before, this overnight tour is one of the best ways to feel truly immersed in what Alaska has to offer. With an overnight stay in an Alaskan handmade, Mongolian style yurt, frontier style dinner and the chance to kayak on two glacial lakes in Alaska, this tour in the Chugach Mountains on the Kenai Peninsula is the kind of experience that lasts lifetime!
Day by day itinerary
1Embark into the Alaska Wilderness⌄
Trail Lake is actually just a wide spot in the Trail River, that starts several miles north at Trail Glacier and runs to Kenai Lake, eventually emptying out into Cook Inlet, where wild salmon first start their long journey from sea back to the places they were born!
We'll hike along a section of the Iditarod National Historic Trail. We're excited that Alaska is investing in this trail and the Alaska Long trail from Seward to Fairbanks!
This overnight yurt adventure begins with a paddle across Trail Lake in Historic Moose Pass. Our guides bring this small Alaskan town’s history to life with local stories of Alaska Nellie, the ghost of gold miner Al & the famed Iditarod Trail as you paddle along the shores of Trail Lake. After a short paddle we’ll glide to a stop & hop out of our kayaks for a hike along a section of the Iditarod National Historic Trail as we head toward the stunning, blue waters of remote Grant Lake. Our hike is moderately rated but there’s no denying we’re in wild Alaska as we hike through Spruce & Hemlock forests along the trail. We’ll soon arrive at our remote yurt camp where your accommodation awaits; an Alaskan handmade yurt, which is situated just a short walk from the banks of gorgeous, glacially carved, Grant Lake. If you’re up for some more paddling, you’ll have more time to explore this stunning lake by kayak.
Meals: Dinner: A frontier style dinner over the fire or grilled steak, fIsh or a vegetarian option. (Selected pre-departure).
Overnight: Overnight in an Alaskan made Yurt with bunks, sleeping pads and a woodstove inside. All you need is a cozy sleeping bag!
2Wake Up to sounds of the Wilderness⌄
In the morning, often to the iconic sound of the Varied Thrush, or other migratory birds of the area, we’ll have a warm breakfast and hot coffee or tea before packing up for our journey back to Moose Pass.
We'll paddle back across Trail Lake to arrive back in Moose Pass.
Meals: Breakfast: Wake to the smell of hot coffee or tea and a toasted bagel, or famous Alaskan made banana nut bread Gourmet Granola.
