Overview
This trek has been designed by the team behind the Transcaucasian Trail, the long-distance hiking route connecting communities across the Caucasus. Rather than following a standard tourist itinerary, the route takes you through the heart of Upper Svaneti, linking medieval tower villages, traditional guesthouses, high mountain passes, and some of Georgia's most spectacular alpine landscapes.
Travelers benefit from detailed route planning, local logistical coordination, accommodation and transport arrangements, GPS navigation resources, and direct connections with local service providers. The experience combines the freedom of independent trekking with the reassurance of local expertise and support, while helping ensure that tourism directly benefits mountain communities along the route.
Day by day itinerary
1Arrival in Etseri⌄
Arrive in Georgia and travel to the mountain village of Etseri, the starting point of your self-guided trek through Upper Svaneti. Depending on your travel plans, reach Etseri via Mestia from Tbilisi or Kutaisi. Settle into your guesthouse, review your route materials, and prepare for the adventure ahead while enjoying your first views of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.
2Etseri to Mazeri⌄
Begin your trek through the scenic mountains of Upper Svaneti. Hike across alpine meadows and panoramic ridgelines before crossing Bak Pass (2,400 m), where spectacular views of Mount Ushba unfold. Descend through peaceful pine forests into the Becho Valley and arrive in the traditional Svan village of Mazeri.
3Mazeri to Mestia⌄
Today's stage is the most demanding of the journey, climbing steadily through the Becho Valley to Guli Pass (2,955 m), the highest point of the trek. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Ushba and Mount Tetnuldi before descending via the Koruldi Lakes area to Mestia, the cultural heart of Upper Svaneti, renowned for its medieval defensive towers.
4Mestia to Lakhiri⌄
Leave Mestia behind and follow quiet mountain trails through forests, meadows, and traditional Svan villages. With continuous views of Mount Tetnuldi, today's route offers a more relaxed pace while showcasing the rural beauty and timeless character of Upper Svaneti before reaching the peaceful village of Lakhiri.
5Lakhiri to Adishi⌄
Follow scenic trails through traditional settlements and forested hills before crossing a mountain pass overlooking the Tetnuldi massif. Descend into Adishi, one of Svaneti's most iconic villages, famous for its medieval stone towers, remote location, and spectacular mountain scenery.
6Adishi to Khalde⌄
Cross the Adishi River before climbing toward Chkhunderi Pass (2,750 m), where panoramic views of the Adishi Glacier and Mount Shkhara—Georgia's highest peak—reward your efforts. Continue across open alpine landscapes before descending to the historic village of Khalde.
7Khalde to Ushguli⌄
Complete your trekking adventure with a spectacular hike to Ushguli, one of Europe's highest permanently inhabited settlements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Depending on conditions, follow either the valley trail or the scenic Lagem Pass route before arriving beneath the towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus.
8Departure from Ushguli⌄
After breakfast, depart Ushguli and continue your onward journey. Shared or private transfers are available to Mestia, where you can continue to Kutaisi or Tbilisi. Your self-guided adventure concludes after experiencing one of the Caucasus' most iconic trekking routes.
