Overview

See Tibet's three greatest sights in one well-paced overland journey: the holy city of Lhasa, the north face of Mount Everest at base camp, and the deep-blue "heavenly lake" of Namtso, without rushing the altitude.

Begin with two nights in Lhasa and a full day among the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit. Then cross the plateau by road, past turquoise Yamdrok Lake and the Karola Glacier to the Kumbum stupa at Gyantse and on to Shigatse. Climb over the Gawu La, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu can line the horizon at once, to sleep in a heated tent beneath Everest's north face at 5,200 m and wake for sunrise.

Many Everest trips stop there; this one adds a day out to Namtso, ringed by the Nyenchen Tanglha peaks. You travel as a small shared group. Comfortable 4-star hotels, a base-camp tent, a licensed English-speaking guide and your Tibet Travel Permit are all included. A shorter 7-day option without Namtso is also available.

Day by day itinerary

  1. 1Arrive in Lhasa⌄

Your guide meets your flight or train and brings you into Lhasa at 3,650 m. The first day is for rest — let your body adjust to the thin air before the journey opens up.

Overnight: Overnight in Lhasa at a 4-star hotel (or similar); exact hotel confirmed after booking

  2. 2Lhasa: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor⌄

A full day in the heart of old Lhasa — the Potala Palace, the winter seat of the Dalai Lamas, in the morning; the seventh-century Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit after lunch.

    Meals: Breakfast

Overnight: Overnight in Lhasa at a 4-star hotel (or similar)

  3. 3Lhasa to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse⌄

Cross the Gampa La for the first sweep of turquoise Yamdrok, one of Tibet's sacred lakes, then continue past the Karola Glacier and the tiered Kumbum stupa at Gyantse to Shigatse for the night.

    Meals: Breakfast

Overnight: Overnight in Shigatse at a comfortable hotel (or similar)

  4. 4Shigatse to Everest Base Camp via the Gawu La⌄

Climb over the Gawu La, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu can line the horizon at once, then drop to Rongbuk, the highest monastery on earth, and on to base camp at about 5,200 m for the night beneath the north face.

    Meals: Breakfast

Overnight: Overnight at Everest Base Camp in a heated tent or guesthouse

  5. 5Everest sunrise, then return to Shigatse⌄

Wake for sunrise if the sky is clear — the moment the highest mountain on earth turns from grey to rose. After time at base camp beneath the north face, retrace the high passes, pausing at the Gyatso La viewpoint, back to Shigatse.

    Meals: Breakfast

Overnight: Overnight in Shigatse at a comfortable hotel (or similar)

  6. 6Shigatse to Lhasa via Tashilhunpo Monastery⌄

  7. 7Day trip to Namtso Lake, then back to Lhasa⌄
