Overview

Climb the highest peak of Africa on the famous 7-Day Machame Route, known for its spectacular scenery and high summit success rate. Trek through lush rainforest, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Led by experienced local mountain guides, this itinerary gives you more time to adjust to the altitude, increasing your chances of reaching the summit safely while enjoying one of the most scenic adventures of Kilimanjaro.

Day by day itinerary

  1. 1Machame Gate – Machame Camp: 11 Km | 5–7 Hrs | Rainforest⌄

After breakfast, meet your professional guide and transfer to Machame Gate (1,800 m), where registration and park formalities are completed before beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure. The trail climbs steadily through the lush rainforest, home to towering trees, hanging moss, colorful flowers, and a variety of wildlife including black-and-white colobus monkeys. This scenic hike is the perfect introduction to Africa's highest mountain as you gain altitude while enjoying the peaceful forest surroundings. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000 m) in the afternoon, where your mountain crew prepares dinner before your first overnight on the mountain.

  2. 2Machame Camp – Shira Camp: 5 Km | 4–6 Hrs | Heath & Moorland⌄

Leave the rainforest behind as today's trail enters the beautiful heath and moorland zone. Giant heather, volcanic rock formations, and open landscapes replace the dense forest while spectacular views begin to unfold. Hike across the famous Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcanic formations, with panoramic views of Mount Meru on clear days. The gradual ascent allows your body to continue adapting to the increasing altitude before arriving at Shira Camp (3,840 m).

  3. 3Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp: 10 Km | 6–8 Hrs | Moorland & Alpine Desert⌄

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Machame Route. Gradually ascend through alpine terrain to the impressive Lava Tower (4,630 m), a striking volcanic rock formation where lunch is served. After spending time at high altitude, descend into the scenic Barranco Valley surrounded by towering cliffs and giant senecio plants. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps improve acclimatization and prepares you for the higher elevations ahead. Overnight at Barranco Camp (3,960 m).

  4. 4Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp: 5 Km | 4–5 Hrs | Alpine Desert⌄

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of the highlights of the Machame Route. Although it appears steep, the climb is a fun scramble rather than a technical ascent. From the top, enjoy magnificent views of glaciers, valleys, and Kilimanjaro's southern slopes before continuing across alpine terrain to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing for the upcoming summit attempt.

  5. 5Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp: 4 Km | 3–4 Hrs | Alpine Desert⌄

The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren as you approach high altitude. After arriving, enjoy lunch, organize your equipment, attend a detailed summit briefing, and complete a health check with your guides.
