Jaisalmer Fort

Rajasthan · UNESCO World Heritage

Jaisalmer Fort rises from a ridge in the Thar Desert like a sandcastle, its walls glowing gold at sunset. Founded in 1156, it is one of the few living forts in the world: thousands of people still live inside, among temples, guest houses and narrow lanes.

Jaisalmer sits far out in western Rajasthan, about five hours from Jodhpur, and most visitors combine the fort with a night or an evening in the dunes.

What to see and do

  • Raj Mahal. The former royal palace inside the fort, now a museum with rooftop views over the town.
  • Jain temples. A group of finely carved 12th to 16th century temples within the walls.
  • The havelis. Patwon ki Haveli and other merchants' mansions below the fort have astonishingly delicate stone facades.
  • Gadisar Lake. A peaceful reservoir lined with shrines, lovely at sunrise.
  • Sam sand dunes. About 40 km away, for camel rides at sunset and nights in desert camps under the stars.

Jaisalmer Fort: questions

Can you stay inside Jaisalmer Fort?

Yes, there are guest houses inside, but many visitors now stay outside the walls to reduce pressure on the fort's old drainage and foundations.

Is a desert safari worth it?

Yes for most people. A sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp near Sam or Khuri is a highlight of many Rajasthan tours.
