Northern Kenya
Ol Pejeta is a private, not for profit conservancy of about 360 square kilometres on the Laikipia plateau, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. It protects one of East Africa's largest black rhino populations, and it cares for Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth.
Because it is a conservancy rather than a national park, Ol Pejeta offers activities you can't do in most parks, from night drives to lion tracking, alongside classic game drives with the Big Five.
Ol Pejeta is about 3.5 hours by road from Nairobi, near the town of Nanyuki, or a short flight to Nanyuki. It is about 2.5 hours from Samburu, so the two are often combined on a northern circuit. See our Samburu and Laikipia guide.
Tip: Pay the conservancy fee for each day you're there; it goes directly into rhino protection and community programmes.
| Fee | US$110 a day (adult), US$55 (ages 3 to 11) |
| Size | About 360 square kilometres |
| Nearest town | Nanyuki, about 3.5 hours from Nairobi |
| Extra activities | Lion tracking, night drives, walks, the northern white rhino visit (paid separately) |
| Pairs with | Samburu, about 2.5 hours north |
Ol Pejeta is a good choice for travellers who want rhinos, the Big Five and a conservation story in one place, without the crowds of the Mara in season. It sits on the equator at around 1,800 metres, so mornings and nights are cool. Activities beyond game drives cost extra, so budget for them.
Every tour here includes Ol Pejeta Conservancy in its itinerary. Best rated first.
