Temple of the Tooth, Kandy

Kandy and the hill country · UNESCO World Heritage

The tooth relic has been the symbol of royal power in Sri Lanka for centuries, and the temple built for it in Kandy is the country's most important Buddhist shrine. The relic itself is kept in a golden casket and never shown, but the drumming, offerings and crowds of worshippers during the daily pujas are unforgettable.

Planning your visit

  • Time it for a puja. The upper shrine room opens during the pujas; the evening one is the most atmospheric.
  • Explore the complex. The museums, the audience hall and the royal palace grounds are included.
  • Plan around the Perahera. Dates, seats and hotels: see our Kandy guide.
