August is the heart of the monsoon in the north, with rain easing in Kerala towards the end of the month.

It is a good month for Ladakh, for a green and relaxed Kerala, and for travellers who prefer low prices and quiet monuments.

Where to go in August

  • Ladakh: Warm days and the best weather of the year.
  • Kerala: Lush tea hills in Munnar and Onam celebrations in some years.
  • Golden Triangle on a budget: Low prices and few crowds, between showers.

What to avoid in August

  • Tiger reserves (core zones closed).
  • The Himalayan hill stations, where landslides close roads.

Festivals in August

  • Independence Day (15 August): Flag raising at the Red Fort in Delhi and kites over the old city.
  • Onam, Kerala: Kerala's harvest festival, in August or September, with snake boat races and feasts.
  • Janmashtami: Krishna's birthday, usually in August or September, celebrated in Mathura and Vrindavan.
