The short answer
- Best ages
- About 6 and up
- Best vehicle
- Private, for flexible stops
- Good parks
- Masai Mara, Nakuru, Nairobi NP
- Finish with
- Diani Beach
Children usually love a safari: animals appear around every bend and there's always something to spot. The key is to keep drives short, build in pool time and choose camps that are set up for families.
Planning tips
- Private vehicle: Stop when you like and return early when children are tired.
- Shorter drives: Fly to the Mara, or split long road days with a night at Lake Naivasha.
- Family camps: Look for family tents, pools and children's programmes. Some camps set minimum ages.
- Age limits: Many camps don't take young children on shared game drives, walking safaris often start at 12 to 16, and balloon flights at about 6 or 7.
- Health: Ask a doctor about malaria tablets for children, and pack child friendly repellent.
Family favourites
- Nairobi: The elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre. See our Nairobi guide.
- Lake Naivasha: Boat trips among hippos and walks with giraffes on Crescent Island.
- Masai Mara: Big cats, elephants and huge herds, and Maasai village visits.
- Diani Beach: Calm lagoons and colobus monkeys to finish the trip.
