Both are in Vietnam's far north, both are home to ethnic minority communities and both have spectacular scenery. The difference is how you experience them: on foot in Sapa, on the road in Ha Giang.
Side by side
| Sapa | Ha Giang | |
|---|---|---|
| Main activity | Trekking between villages, homestays | The Ha Giang loop by motorbike or car |
| Scenery | Rice terraces and Fansipan | The Dong Van Karst Plateau (a UNESCO Global Geopark), deep gorges, Ma Pi Leng Pass |
| From Hanoi | About 5 to 6 hours, or overnight train | About 6 to 7 hours by road |
| Ideal time | 2 to 3 nights | 3 to 4 days for the loop |
| Crowds | Busy town, quieter trails | Growing, but more remote |
| Best months | September to November, March to May | September to November (buckwheat flowers in October and November) |
The Ha Giang loop safely
- Roads are steep, narrow and winding. Unless you are an experienced rider with a valid licence, ride pillion with a local driver (often called an Easy Rider) or go by car.
- Check that your travel insurance covers motorbike travel; many policies do not without the right licence.
- Allow at least three days; four is more relaxed.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Sapa if: you want to walk, stay with a family and keep travel time short. See our Sapa trekking guide.
- Choose Ha Giang if: you want the most dramatic mountain scenery and are happy with several days on the road.
- Do both if: you have three weeks or more and love mountains.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ha Giang better than Sapa?
It depends on what you want. Ha Giang has wilder, more dramatic scenery and fewer visitors; Sapa is better for trekking and is easier to reach.
Do I need to ride a motorbike in Ha Giang?
No. Most visitors ride with a local driver or go by car, which is safer and lets you enjoy the views.
