Difficulty
Easy to moderate, muddy after rain

Sapa sits at around 1,500 metres in the mountains near the Chinese border, surrounded by valleys carved into rice terraces and home to Hmong, Dao, Giay and Tay communities. Walking between their villages, often with a local guide from those communities, is the reason to come.

The town itself has grown fast and is busy, but a short walk takes you into some of the most beautiful countryside in Southeast Asia.

Trekking responsibly

  • Hire a licensed local guide; many are women from the villages you walk through.
  • Ask before photographing people, and respect a no.
  • Don't give sweets or money to children; support community projects or buy crafts instead.
  • Choose homestays and guides recommended by reputable operators so money reaches local families.
