How to choose your Everest Base Camp trek
Classic route or a variation?
The classic trek flies to Lukla, walks up through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche to Base Camp, and climbs Kala Patthar for the best view of Everest itself. Longer versions add the Gokyo Lakes and Cho La pass, while helicopter return treks walk up and fly back from Gorak Shep, saving three or four days.
Count the rest days
Altitude, not fitness, is what stops most people. Good itineraries include at least two acclimatisation days, usually in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. A trek that looks cheaper because it is shorter often skips one of them.
Check what the price includes
Compare whether each tour includes the return Lukla flights, national park and local area permits, a licensed guide, porters, teahouse rooms, meals on the trail and hotels in Kathmandu. These can add up to a large share of the total cost.
Group or private
Group departures are usually the best value for solo travellers. Private treks cost a little more per person but let you set the pace, choose your start date and add extra rest days.
Everest Base Camp questions
How long does the Everest Base Camp trek take?
Most itineraries take 12 to 14 days from Kathmandu, including the flights to and from Lukla and two acclimatisation days. Treks with a helicopter return can be done in about 9 to 11 days, while routes via the Gokyo Lakes take 15 days or more.
How hard is the trek?
No climbing skills are needed, but you will walk for five to seven hours on most days on rocky, uneven trails, at altitudes above 5,000 metres near the end. Regular walking or hill training in the months before you go makes the trek far more enjoyable.
When is the best time to go?
October and November bring the clearest skies and mountain views. March to May is the second season, with warmer days and rhododendrons in bloom. Winter is cold but quiet, and the June to September monsoon brings cloud and rain.
Do the Lukla flights get cancelled?
Delays are common because the flights need clear weather, and in the busy seasons many flights leave from Ramechhap, a drive of several hours from Kathmandu. It is worth keeping a spare day at the end of your trip.
Is a guide included?
Yes. Every trek on this page is a guided tour, and most include permits and teahouse accommodation on the trail. Check each tour for porters, meals and Kathmandu hotels, which vary.
