Ballestas Islands and Paracas

The coast

Off the coast at Paracas, the Ballestas Islands are a protected haven for wildlife: sea lions on the rocks, Humboldt penguins, and huge colonies of boobies, cormorants and pelicans. Boats circle the islands but do not land.

On the way out you pass the Candelabra, a giant geoglyph carved into a sandy hillside.

Tips

  • Go in the morning. The sea is calmer and afternoon boats are often cancelled for wind.
  • Bring a hat. The birds are many, and boats are open.
  • Continue south. Huacachina's dunes are about 1.5 hours away. See our south coast guide.

Ballestas Islands and Paracas: questions

Can you land on the Ballestas Islands?

No. The islands are protected, so boats circle close to the rocks without landing.

Is the Ballestas boat trip worth it?

Yes, for the wildlife. It is short and easy to combine with Huacachina on the same day.
