Nazca Lines

The coast · UNESCO World Heritage

Between roughly 500 BC and 500 AD, the Nazca people drew hundreds of lines, shapes and animal figures across the desert by moving the dark surface stones. The hummingbird, monkey and spider are each as long as a sports field.

Most of the figures can only be appreciated from the air, on a 30 minute flight in a small plane.

Plane or tower?

The flight shows the famous figures; the tower shows only the Hands and the Tree. Flights bank steeply, so fly early when the air is calm and eat lightly. Our south coast guide compares the options.

Nazca Lines: questions

Are the Nazca Lines worth seeing?

For most visitors, yes, but the flight is short and bumpy. If you are prone to motion sickness, the tower is a gentler alternative.

How old are the Nazca Lines?

Most were made between about 500 BC and 500 AD by the Nazca culture.
