Udawalawe National Park

The south and its national parks

Udawalawe is the most reliable place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, with several hundred living around the reservoir. It sits neatly between Ella and the south coast, so a morning or afternoon safari fits easily into a drive.

Next to the park, the Elephant Transit Home raises orphaned calves and releases them into the wild. Visitors can watch the feeds from a viewing platform.

Planning your visit

  • Add the Transit Home. Feeds happen several times a day; check the times locally.
  • Choose ethical stops. The Transit Home releases elephants; avoid places offering rides.
