- Elephants: Udawalawe and the Elephant Transit Home
- Herds are seen on almost every safari, and at the transit home you can watch orphaned calves being fed before release. Avoid places offering elephant rides.
- Trains: Nanu Oya to Ella
- Three hours of tea estates, tunnels and waving children. Book reserved seats so everyone sits together.
- Beaches: Unawatuna or Pasikudah
- Calm, shallow water: Unawatuna from December to April, Pasikudah from May to September.
- Climbing and adventure: Pidurangala and Little Adam's Peak
- Short, rewarding climbs. Sigiriya's upper stairways can be scary for little ones.
- Animals of all kinds: Yala and the turtle beaches
- Leopards, crocodiles and peacocks at Yala, and turtle hatcheries on the south coast; choose conservation projects that release hatchlings quickly.
Practical tips
- Ask your driver for child seats in advance; they are not standard.
- Pack mosquito repellent safe for children, sun protection and a light layer for the hills.
- Choose safaris in the morning and keep afternoons for pools and naps.
- Children usually pay about half at the main sights, and under 6s are often free.
