Amboseli is small and flat, a dusty plain fed by springs from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt. The swamps draw elephants all year, and the park's herds have been studied for decades, so they are unusually calm around vehicles.

Kilimanjaro itself is in Tanzania, just across the border. It is often hidden by cloud from mid morning, so be out early.

What to see

  • Elephants: Families and big tuskers crossing the plains and wallowing in the swamps.
  • Observation Hill: A short climb for views over the swamps and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro.
  • Other wildlife: Lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, hippos, giraffes and many birds; no rhinos.
  • Maasai culture: Several camps sit on community land and offer village visits and guided walks.

When to go

June to October and January to February are driest, with animals near the swamps. The mountain is clearest at dawn and sometimes at sunset. April and May bring the long rains.
