Best time
Arrive around 6 am
Clearest months
January to March
Cost
About US$40 all in, sharing a vehicle

Horton Plains is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka: open grassland and cloud forest on a plateau high above the tea country. The loop walk passes Mini World's End, the main World's End cliff and Baker's Falls, and sambar deer graze near the entrance.

Planning the walk

  • Arrive early: Mornings from about 6 to 10 am give the best chance of a view. By late morning, cloud usually fills the valley.
  • The loop: About 9 km and 3 hours at a steady pace, mostly flat with some rocky sections. Walk clockwise to reach World's End first.
  • What to bring: Warm and waterproof layers, water and snacks. Plastic and litter rules are strict: bring reusable bottles.
  • Fees: Entry, vehicle and service charges together come to about US$40 per person when sharing a vehicle. Add it up in our fee calculator.
