The Cultural Triangle, in the dry plains north of Kandy, holds Sri Lanka's ancient capitals and its most famous sight: Sigiriya, a 5th century palace on top of a 180 m rock. Five of the country's World Heritage sites are here or nearby.

The sights

  • Sigiriya Rock: Climb past the frescoes, the mirror wall and the giant lion's paws to the palace ruins on the summit. About US$35.
  • Pidurangala: The rock next door, with the classic view of Sigiriya. About US$3; the last section is a scramble over boulders.
  • Dambulla cave temples: Five caves filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings, a short climb above the town.
  • Polonnaruwa: A compact medieval capital best seen by bicycle, with the rock carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara.
  • Anuradhapura: The first capital, with huge white dagobas and the sacred Bodhi tree. More spread out and still a living pilgrimage site.
  • Minneriya: Elephant safaris 30 minutes away, best from July to October.

Sigiriya or Pidurangala?

Which rock should you climb?

I want the history: Sigiriya
Only Sigiriya has the frescoes, the lion's paws and the palace on top. Go at opening time to beat the heat and the queues.
I want the view: Pidurangala
The best photos of Sigiriya are taken from Pidurangala, especially at sunrise. It is cheap, but the last part is a scramble.
I'm nervous of heights: Pidurangala, with care
Sigiriya's upper stairways are on metal walkways against a sheer rock face. Pidurangala has no exposed stairs but needs a short climb over rocks.
I have time for both: Pidurangala at sunrise, Sigiriya after
Watch sunrise from Pidurangala, then climb Sigiriya straight after, before the midday heat.

Tip: Climb early. By late morning the rock is hot and the stairways queue up, especially at weekends and on full moon (Poya) holidays.
