What's changed recentlyShow
- 9 Apr 2026Trains on the Northern Line between Colombo and Kankesanturai, via Jaffna, resumed after repairs to cyclone damage.
Few tours reach the north, which was off limits for decades during the civil war that ended in 2009. Today it is safe and welcoming, and it rewards the extra effort with Tamil temples, colourful markets, quiet islands and some of the best food in the country.
What to see
- Nallur Kandaswamy temple: Jaffna's great golden temple. Its 25 day festival, usually in August, draws huge crowds.
- Jaffna Fort and the old town: A Dutch star fort, the library and the market.
- The islands: Causeways and ferries to Kayts, Nainativu (with its Buddhist and Hindu temples) and Delft, with wild ponies and coral walls.
- Point Pedro and Casuarina Beach: The northern tip of the island and a calm, shallow beach.
- Food: Jaffna crab curry, odiyal kool seafood soup and palmyra sweets.
Getting there
- Train: The Northern Line from Colombo to Jaffna and Kankesanturai reopened on 9 April 2026, with reserved seats on some services.
- Road: About 7 to 8 hours from Colombo, or around 4 hours from Anuradhapura, which fits after the Cultural Triangle.
- Air: Jaffna's airport at Palaly has had flights to Chennai in India; domestic services come and go, so check before planning.
